Anna always felt a mix of excitement and apprehension as the bus pulled into the bustling city of Ernakulam. Leaving behind the serene, lush hills of Chooralmala was always bittersweet. Her heart held a deep love for her village, nestled in the verdant embrace of Wayanad, but the promise of a brighter future drew her towards the city lights.  Anna's parents, Mathews and Susanna, were hardworking tea plantation laborers. They had always dreamed of giving their only daughter a life free from the constraints of their village's modest means. Their faith was their anchor, and every Sunday they would walk to the small church in Vellarmala, praying for Anna's success. Despite their simple lifestyle, Mathews and Susanna were content. Their lives revolved around the rhythms of nature and the church's liturgical calendar. Anna, however, yearned for more. The city, with its myriad opportunities and vibrant lifestyle, called to her like a siren's song. She envisione...

𝓕𝓲𝓻𝓼𝓽 𝓭𝓪𝔂 𝓳𝓲𝓽𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓼... My heart skipped a beat when I saw the students of my class. They were very smart compared to the students I had back in Kerala. I had to teach history in class six in the first hour and that gave me a nightmare. I always felt that History is not my cup of tea... So never took interest to know much about the subject the whole of my life... I regretted my choice then because I knew nothing about History... First day itself I felt like a mess! But I had to keep up with the expectations of my sisters. I couldn't simply give up. I knew those students sitting infront of me were smart, but I had to be smarter than them.  I addressed the class with a very confident smile. I could successfully weave a conversation which was so beautiful that they never knew I was nervous and didn't prepare for my class. All of my students were happy to learn their new teacher and wanted to know more about me as I wanted to know more about them too and the...

𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓵𝓲𝓽𝓽𝓵𝓮 𝓻𝓮𝓭 𝓻𝓲𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓱𝓸𝓸𝓭.... As our vehicle reached the school gate, the security guard wished us 'Good morning' with a full smile. We got the vehicle parked and walked along with children through the sandy ground. All of us were covered well to safeguard ourselves from the cold weather. Children had a special uniform for the season of thick blazers and stockings. All covered even their heads and ears to not let the cold get inside them in any way. Within three days of stay there I had developed acute pain in my toe as they started to get affected with the severe cold outside. I didn't bother much about it since I didn't want to get a leave on the first day of my teaching. I walked quite slowly and through the foggy mist I saw a girl in red hood walk past me.She was bending due to the heaviness of her bag. She was small in stature and was a cute little thing that stroll along with the other children of her age. She lifted her bowed he...

𝓦𝓱𝓮𝓷 𝓙 𝓼𝓶𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓮𝓭 𝓗𝓲𝓶 𝓽𝓱𝓮𝓻𝓮... I woke up with a smile on my lips, yes this was what I was waiting for. We had to go to the village for mass on every Sunday. It was a sunday in fact and I was thrilled to see the village and the people. We travelled a long way to the village that was situated in the midst of the forest. Every single sight of the nut- brown forest filled me with excitement. Reaching our destination we got down at a village road close to the church. The first sight of the village brought mixed feelings of thrill and pity. I was thrilled of course, since I've always dreamt of being in such a place like this. I didn't know why, but I felt so much at home there, as if I had come to my own place of birth and to my people. I felt I belonged there for some reason. At the same time I felt pity for the people and I was disturbed to see their struggles in the village.            We were welcomed by the people with a bouquet ...

𝓑𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓬𝓪𝓵𝓵 𝓸𝓯  𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓷𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓮 Piercing the foggy mist, our vehicle passed through the neatly tarred road that led us to the outskirts of the village. The road seemed like a snake in the field that just got harvested of its crop. The season was all coloured with sun bleached hay. No sign of green was to be found. Many find winter as a dead time of the year but for some reason I felt it full of life and mysterious feelings... There was life hidden under those straws in the field. It took rest beneath the blanket of the damp soil only to rise with new life and strength in the rain shower. The sun had just woke up from his slumber and still needed time to warm up the earth, his beloved.  A huge building wearing a blue cap faded in to the picture. It stood by the side of the wavy road we traveled. It was a huge and magnificent edifice, a structure of that size in the whole of the topography. Some tumbling huts were the only thing I could see rathe...

𝓒𝓸𝓯𝓮𝓮 𝓫𝓵𝓪𝓬𝓴, 𝓪𝓷𝓭 𝓶𝔂 𝓶𝓸𝓻𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓫𝓻𝓲𝓰𝓱𝓽... It was my first day to school. As I stepped out of my little bed the cold of the icy floor crept slowly inside my feet. I was reminded of the smell of my mother's warm black coffee back at home... I could literally feel it's smell. My heart wished for one such now. But no one brought me coffee... There was no one like her who would miraculously let my simple dreams come to be true. I missed her a lot... I wore my shoes and dragged myself to the washroom. I had a hot water bath and came to the kitchen where sisters were busy preparing the breakfast. They were anxious that I would be hungry with the ordinary corn flakes breakfast. So they were trying to prepare some steamed cakes for me. I knew, to prepare this they had to get up much early. I felt very bad that I made their day even more strenuous. I said that it was not necessary and the ordinary cornflakes would be enough. But they would tell " ...
